Church Relaunch Letter - May 26

Dear Church of the Open Bible Family,

Back in March, our governing authorities thought it wise to close all corporate gathering places: schools, sports venues, and churches, to name a few, for the sake of public health. As a church we obliged, out of a desire to obey God’s commands: 1) to submit to those He has placed in authority over us (Rom 13:1-5); 2) out of love and care for others (Phil 2:1-4); and 3) for the sake of our ongoing witness in our community (Col 4:5). Now that the government has given approval for churches to begin to meet, albeit with restrictions, we believe it is incumbent upon us to move towards this in accordance with God’s command for us to gather in Hebrews 10:25.

That being said, it is our hope as leaders to return to services in our facility on the weekend of June 6-7. We are planning to offer 2-3 smaller services over Sat-Sun in compliance with current gathering restrictions. Just to be clear that this is not a return to the way things used to be. Much will be different, but what is most important will stay the same. We will also continue to provide an online recording of our service.

Before we address the details, we want to remind you that our gathering in this way is not-ideal and is an intermediate stage until we can gather without restriction. If you do not feel willing or able to comply with the following restrictions we encourage you to continue to participate with us online.

Before the Service:

  1. Assess whether you and your family are healthy enough to attend (consider taking this online self-assessment).
  2. Register for one of our service times (Saturday - 7:00pm; Sunday - 10:00am and 2:00pm). Please go through the registration even if you plan to continue attending online (that option will be available). It is our hope that you will commit to one service time for subsequent weeks but there will be flexibility if needed. You can register by using this online form or by calling Pastor Jeremy at 403-963-7716. If you register online your registration will be confirmed with a phone call.
  3. Prepare to bring what you need for your children (i.e., snacks, coloring books, etc.). Our nursery and children’s church will not be available so children will remain with their parents for the service. Feel free to bring your own water or coffee in a travel mug. You may also wear your own mask or gloves out of caution though that is not a requirement as we will maintain proper physical distancing.

Arriving for the Service:

  1. When you arrive you will be welcomed by one of our leaders at the main doors. Hand sanitizer will be provided for your use. They will confirm your registration, ask you some questions, and escort to your seats.
  2. There will signage and tape to help facilitate physical distancing as you wait in line and/go to your seats. We will refrain from physical contact (i.e., shaking hands) with those other than who we came with, both before and after the service.
  3. Properly spaced pews will ensure proper distancing in the sanctuary, while a number of tables at the back will be made available for families with children.

During the Service:

  1. As mentioned, children must remain with their family during the course of the service. Physical distancing between family units will be maintained at all times.
  2. Washrooms will be available if needed.
  3. Unfortunately, there is to be no corporate singing at this time. We will stand and worship God together from our hearts by hearing His praises sung. Special music will be included.
  4. Most other elements of our service will continue to be included: announcements, prayer,  Scripture reading, kid’s time, and the sermon.

Leaving the Service:

  1. At the conclusion of the service, each family unit will be dismissed, one at a time out the side sanctuary door.
  2. As you leave, you may drop your offering in the box/plate on the way by.
  3. We also ask that you refrain from milling about the building after the service.

All of this might seem overwhelming at first glance and if you do not feel able or willing to comply, we encourage your participation online. We are excited to move towards gathering as a Body again. It is our desire to provide opportunity to meet together, worship together, and be fed from God’s Word together. Please contact Pastor Jeremy with any questions or concerns.

In Christ,

The Church of the Open Bible Ponoka Leadership Board
