Dear Church of the Open Bible,

This Advent season, we’ve been tracing God’s promise of salvation in the Old Testament. The first week we looked at that initial glimmer of hope in Genesis 3:15. This past Sunday, Aiden shared from 2 Sam 7:12-16, and how that glimmer had grown to God’s promise of a King who would come from the line of David, and have an eternal kingdom characterized by peace.

This hope continues to grow as we look at a few Psalms that speak of this unique and special King. Feel free to use the questions below for your individual study or together with family and friends as a follow-up to Aiden’s sermon.

Psalm 2 - The Sonship of the Promised King

  • Before you read, look for the three titles the psalmist uses to describe the one associated with the LORD. Read Psalm 2:1-12.
  • How do these remind you of God’s promises in Gen 49:8-12, Num 24:5-19, and 2 Sam 7:12-16?
  • What in these verses might point to one greater than King David?
  • Blessing comes when we take refuge in God through the reign of His Anointed King and Son, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 110 - The Priesthood of the Promised King

  • Read Psalm 110. Who are the three main characters in verse one (besides “your enemies”)?
  • David, the psalmist, describes the LORD God, as speaking to one who is David’s Lord. The answer to who David refers to as “my Lord” stumps the Pharisees in Matt 21:41-45, but it shouldn’t as we consider God’s previous promises. What are the similarities between this promised Lord and the promised King in Psalm 2?
  • In verse 4, God promises that this Lord will not only be a victorious King but an eternal priest. Praise God that this is fulfilled by none other than Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior (Acts 2:33-36)!
